“WHAT IS YOUR LIFE?”

 James 4:13-17                          (ESV

Boasting About Tomorrow

“[13] Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”—[14] yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. “WHAT IS YOUR LIFE?” For YOU ARE A MIST that appears for A LITTLE TIME and then vanishes. [15] Instead you ought to say, “If the LORD wills, we will live and do this or that.” [16] As it is, YOU BOAST IN YOUR ARROGANCE. ALL BOASTING IS EVIL. [17] So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

This morning I was watching a video on a social media site about a 52 year old man who had buried his father a couple of months ago.  The man was somber, but not distressed.  Getting across his point that life is BRIEF was pretty noticeable.  Life is but a mist (a vapor), even for those who live to be 100 years old!  We need to ALL calculate “WHAT IS YOUR LIFE?” before our journey is complete!!!

My great grandfather and my grandfather were 89 1/2 years old when they died.  My mom was 77 1/2 years old when she died.  But her mother was barely 70 years old when she left “this world”!  My little sister, she was 34 years and 3 days old when stomach cancer claimed her life.  I read recently about an infant who was born and died within the first day of its life because of a “birth defect”.

We NEVER know when our time on earth will end!  JESUS says in John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, AND THE LIFE. No one comes to the FATHER except through ME”!  Just yesterday I had a high school classmate who didn’t wake up from their sleep!  At what age does a person exit “this world” and those left not speculate about the reasons for their departure?  “WHAT IS YOUR LIFE?” needs to be considered while we still are capable of serving our CREATOR!

For someone who has experienced the medical history that I have, it should be almost expected that death will visit me one day!  But do we “BE STILL, AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD” as much as we would if we KNEW we would not wake up the next day?  When JESUS has decided to NOT give us breath (Isaiah 42:5), we need to have already considered “WHAT IS YOUR LIFE?”.  SOON, it will be too late!!!
