Romans 6:20-23 (ESV)
"20 For when YOU WERE SLAVES OF SIN, you were FREE in regard to righteousness.
21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become "SLAVES OF GOD", the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of GOD is eternal life in CHRIST JESUS our LORD."
Being a SLAVE of someone or something is a terrible experience. CHOOSING to be a SLAVE of someone or something could be considered insanity! In essence, isn't that what we do when we succumb to the temptation to CHOOSE to do what we think is best, rather than what the HOLY SPIRIT is leading us to do? And what do we think the end game will be of our CHOICES? In Romans 6:21b scripture says "For the end of those things is death!"
We all have, at one time or another, CHOSEN to be our own boss instead of doing what GOD's Plan for our lives called for. It's the Adamic nature that we all inherited, a family trait that we can not escape! Why in this world didn't my parents prevent me from this awful trait? Being subjected to sin is a CHOICE we all willingly participate in as we ALL believe we will only do that which is right. Scripture states in Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death." Ultimately, we CHOOSE death over life in CHRIST............ individually!
Why do we then knowingly resort to being SLAVES TO SIN when we have been called out of darkness into HIS marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9)? "What fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed?" If the end result of "those things" is death, why do we indulge ourselves ? Paul writes in the very next chapter of Romans, verse 18 "For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I HAVE THE DESIRE to do what is right, BUT NOT THE ABILITY to carry it out."
Now that we have documented that NONE OF US can live a life worthy of a glimpse of Holiness, can we agree that rather than being a SLAVE TO SIN, we prefer being a "SLAVE TO GOD"? Being a "SLAVE TO GOD" inherently brings freedom from the bondage of sin. The righteousness of JESUS CHRIST was, and is, "imparted" to all who believe (2 Corinthians 5:21) so we are FREE, once and for all! If you are FREE, don't live in bondage! Be a "SLAVE TO GOD!"
