"6 This is HE who came by water and blood-JESUS CHRIST; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the SPIRIT is the ONE who testifies, because the SPIRIT is the truth.
7 For there are three that testify:
8 the SPIRIT and the water and the blood; and these three agree.
9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of GOD is greater, for this is the testimony of GOD that he has borne concerning his SON.
10 Whoever believes in the SON of GOD has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe GOD has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that GOD has borne concerning his SON.
11 And this is the testimony, that GOD gave us eternal life, and this life is in HIS SON.
12 Whoever has the SON has life; whoever does not have the SON of GOD does not have life.
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the SON of GOD that you may know that you have eternal life."
Our lives consist of three different beings....SPIRIT, BODY, and SOUL. Understanding the intricacies of our make up is something that some never grasp. Recently I wrote about GOD "hiding these things from wise and prudent" and revealing those things "to little children" (Matthew 11:25-30). Considering myself no more than a "little child", I share the insights I feel the Holy Spirit is entrusting me with. Of great interest to me is to share only TRUTHS and let readers decide whether or not the TRUTH shared will apply to their life. The following paragraph is from a commentary I read this morning. The capitalizations have been added to EMPHASIZE the parts of our person.
"We are a SPIRIT being, we live in a BODY and we possess a SOUL. The real person inside of us is our SPIRIT. Our SOUL consists of our mind, will and emotions. Our BODIES are obviously what we live in while we are here on earth. How did demonic spirits vex and possess (control) people in the Bible? It was through their SOULS (MINDS, as in mental illness and insanity), and their BODIES (as in the woman who had the SPIRIT of infirmity)."
In Genesis 1:27 GOD's Word declares that we are made "in HIS image". Then in John 4:24 JESUS says that "GOD IS SPIRIT". My limited education leads me to understand if we want to be as HE is, that our focus should then be on our SPIRIT first, then the remainder of our persons. JESUS CHRIST came to sacrifice HIS BODY, SOUL, and SPIRIT so mankind could have access to GOD THE FATHER (Matthew 27:51). When JESUS was crucified on CALVARY, the entire earth was darkened (Matthew 27:45). GOD (who is Spirit) had never been separated from JESUS. JESUS is the "Light of the world" (John 8:12), when JESUS took on the sin of the world, a darkness fell over the Light of the world. GOD knew a DIVINE sacrifice would be required for my salvation, in fact, HE planned it to happen exactly this way. Because GOD IS LOVE, only HE could provide the atonement for the depravity of mankind.
Since "GOD IS SPIRIT" and we are created "in HIS image", our ETERNAL SPIRITUAL LIFE can ONLY come from HIM! 1 John 5:11 says "that GOD gave us eternal LIFE, and this LIFE is in HIS SON." The words "THE MEANING OF LIFE" can only be truly defined by using the name JESUS CHRIST! JESUS says in John 14:6 "I am the way, and the truth, and the LIFE. No one comes to the FATHER except through me." Our only hope for eternal LIFE is to know "THE MEANING OF LIFE", the Person of JESUS CHRIST!
