"This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
One point that needs to be made clear, "in HIM is no darkness at all"! In HIM (GOD), there is NO DARKNESS AT ALL!
There are times we speak and we are convinced we "know" the TRUTH. Yet, the TRUTH sometimes is difficult to discern from a cleverly veiled lie. In John 8:44 JESUS reveals "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is 'no truth' in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
There is "NO TRUTH" in the devil. As early as Adam and Eve, the devil has been "deceiving" mankind. In Genesis 3 the devil manipulated his words to make Eve believe his lies. Deceit has always been his "modus operandi"! It is the most effective way to make his lie believable.
In John 17:17 JESUS says "Sanctify them through thy TRUTH: thy word is TRUTH." John 1:17 says "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and TRUTH came by JESUS CHRIST." It would seem rather clear to me, there are only two clear options........
TRUTH or no-truth!
